Ceiling Beam Installation VideoComplete installation video

Step 1 First, you will need to layout the room for where the ceiling beams will be installed (See Example A). While doing the layout of the room, make sure to pay attention to the location of can lights, sprinkler heads, cold air returns, air registers, ceiling fans, etc. Please note for ceiling beams to meet building code requirements, the beams typically need to be at least 6 inches away from any sprinkler head. You should check your state’s building codes before installation to insure compliance.

Step 2 After the layout has been completed, you will need to chalk line the placement of the nailer plates. To do so, start by finding the center of each row of beams. Chalk the center to show placement (See Illustration Example B). After finding the center, measure over from the center line to the edge of the nailer plate. For Beam-A (6.5” wide plate) measure over 3.25 ” from the beams center line. For Beam-B (4” wide plate) measure over 2” from the beams center line. Now a line can be chalked for the placement of the nailer plate. Secondly, find the center of the room. If the dimension from the wall to the center of the room is on a even number(2,4,6,8,10) then the end of the beam will be in the center of the room. If the dimension from the wall to the center of the room is on a odd number (3,5,7,9,11) then the center of the beam will go in the center of the room. After the center has been established, measure over every four feet to show the placement of the plates.

Step 3 For each nailer plate, there are four drywall anchors. Place the nailer plate against the ceiling. The plate should line up with the outside chalk line. Drill a 1/8 “ hole through the pre-drilled plates and into the drywall to show placement for the drywall anchors . Screw drywall anchors into the drywall. (note - make sure the plates are on the same side of the chalk line.)

Step 4 After the drywall anchors are set, it is time to screw up the nailer plates. Put two lines of liquid nails (not included) on the back side (See Illustration example C) of the nailer plate. Put the plate against the ceiling and screw the screws through the predrilled holes and into the drywall anchors. The nailer plate will screw up tight to the drywall.

Step 5 Now the Beams can be installed. Make sure to start at one side of the wall. Take a measurement from the end of the last complete beam to the wall. Deduct .25” from the overall measurement and the Beam should be placed .25” away from the wall. This will help to keep the existing wall from being damaged. The female end of the beam (See Illustration Example D) is what needs to be cut off to be placed against the wall. This will leave the male end of the beam to run the remainder of the beams off of. When you reach the other side of the wall, again leave a .25” space between the beam and the wall to prevent damage to the wall.

Step 6 Now that all of the beams are installed, it is time to put on the straps and the clavos . Locate the center of the strap which is the center of the joint between two beams. Next, line up the pre-drilled holes in the straps with the joint between two beams. Drill a 1/8” hole through the pre-drilled straps into the beams. After the pre-drilling is finished, screw the clavos through the straps and into the beams.
